A Plastid Gene Phylogeny of the Yam Genus, Dioscorea: Roots, Fruits and Madagascar Naturalis
Wilkin, P.; Schols, P.; Chase, M.; Chayamarit, K.; Furness, C.; Huysmans, S.; Rakotonasolo, F.; Smets, E.; Thapyai, C..
Following recent phylogenetic studies of the families and genera of Dioscoreales, the identification of monophyletic infrageneric taxa in the pantropical genus Dioscorea is a priority. A phylogenetic analysis based on sequence data from the plastid genes rbcL and matK is presented, using 67 species of Dioscorea and covering all the main Old World and selected New World lineages. The analysis used 14 outgroup taxa, including Trichopus Gaertn., Tacca J.R. & G. Forster, Stenomeris Planch., Burmannia L. and Thismia Griff. The main findings are: a) that a clade of rhizomatous taxa is sister to the rest of Dioscorea; b) the main Old World groups (such as the right-twining D. sect. Enantiophyllum) are monophyletic and c) there are two distinct lineages among...

First molecular analysis of the genus Bryopsis (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) from Brazil, with an emphasis on the Pernambuco coast Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Marcella Guennes Tavares de; Pereira,Sonia Maria Barreto; Benko-Iseppon,Ana Maria; Balbino,Valdir Queiroz; Silva Junior,Wilson José da; Ximenes,Caroline Feijão; Carvalho,Maria de Fátima de Oliveira; Cassano,Valéria.
ABSTRACT The green algal genus Bryopsis has simple morphology and high phenotypic plasticity, making it difficult to identify its species based on morphological characteristics alone. This study evaluated the diversity of Bryopsis in northeastern Brazil (the State of Pernambuco), based on morphological and molecular data using the markers tufA and rbcL. Molecular analyses were incongruent with morphology, demonstrating the existence of cryptic and polymorphic species in the genus. Of the four taxa cited for the area based only on morphological data (Bryopsis corymbosa, B. pennata, B. plumosa, Bryopsis sp.), only B. pennata was recorded. Typical specimens of B. pennata and B. plumosa were grouped with low genetic divergence, 0-0.21 % for tufA and no...

Molecular phylogeny of Dioscorea (Dioscoreaceae) in East and Southeast Asia Naturalis
Hsu, K.-M.; Tsai, J.-L.; Chen, M.-Y.; Ku, H.-M.; Liu, S.-C..
The phylogenetic relationships of Dioscorea, including sections Botryosicyos, Combilium, Enantiophyllum, Lasiophyton, Opsophyton, Shannicorea and Stenophora, are reconstructed with chloroplast trnL-F, matK, rbcL and atpB-rbcL sequence data, covering a total of 72 accessions including 48 ingroup species and five outgroup species from East and Southeast Asia. The seven Asian sections do reflect the genetic relationships among the species that they include. In summary, D. sect. Combilium and sect. Shannicorea are recognized as closely related sections with moderate support. The results also support Burkills treatment of subsect. Euopsophyton (D. bulbifera) as sect. Opsophyton and subsect. Macrourae (D. sansibarensis) as sect. Macroura. In addition, there is a...

Molecular systematics of Thorea (Rhodophyta, Thoreales) species in Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Necchi Júnior,Orlando; Oliveira,Mariana Cabral de; Salles,Patrícia.
This study aimed to evaluate species level taxonomy and phylogenetic relationship among Thorea species in Brazil and other regions of the world using two molecular markers - RUBISCO large subunit plastid gene (rbcL) and nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA). Three samples of Thorea from Brazil (states of Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo) and one sample from Dominican Republic (DR) were sequenced. Analyses based on partial sequences of rbcL (1,282 bp) and complete sequences of SSU (1,752 bp) were essentially congruent and revealed that Thoreales formed a distinct monophyletic clade, which had two major branches with high support, representing the genera Thorea and Nemalionopsis. Thorea clade had four main branches with high support for all...

Phylogenetic analyses of the Laurencia complex (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) support recognition of five genera: Chondrophycus, Laurencia, Osmundea, Palisada and Yuzurua stat. nov. ArchiMer
Martin-lescanne, Julie; Rousseau, Florence; De Reviers, Bruno; Payri, Claude; Couloux, Arnaud; Cruaud, Corinne; Le Gall, Line.
Molecular phylogenies inferred from rbcL sequences including 39 representative members of the Laurencia complex confirm the four genera currently recognised within the complex: Laurencia sensu stricto, Osmundea, Chondrophycus and the recently described genus Palisada. Furthermore, Palisada poiteaui was resolved as a fifth independent lineage suggesting that the complex is actually composed of five rather than four genera. Palisada poiteaui is the type species of the subgenus Yuzurua, and elevation of this subgenus to generic rank is proposed. This new genus allied strongly with Laurencia s.s. However, the other intergeneric relationships were not well supported, suggesting that rbcL sequences may not have sufficient signal to clarify infrageneric...

Phylogenetic position and taxonomic disposition of Turraea breviflora (Meliaceae), a hitherto enigmatic species Naturalis
Muellner, A.N.; Mabberley, D.J..
For decades, the rare Malesian shrublet hitherto called Turraea breviflora, was the only species of the pantropical family Meliaceae which could not confidently be placed in a genus. Previous morphological re-investigation led to the exclusion of the species from Turraea and suggested possibly close links with Munronia. In this study, parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of DNA sequence data from plastid rbcL and nuclear ITS rDNA were used to infer the phylogenetic position of T. breviflora and its affinities to other representatives of the family. Phylogenetic analyses support Mabberley’s (1995a) proposal that the concept of the genus Munronia be expanded to accommodate it. The new combination Munronia breviflora (Ridl.) Mabb. &...

Phylogeny of Cyperaceae based on DNA sequence data - a new rbcL analysis Naturalis
Simpson, D.A.; Muthama Muasya, A.; Alves, M.V.; Bruhl, J.J.; Dhooge, S.; Chase, M.W.; Furness, C.A.; Ghamkhar, K.; Goetghebeur, P.; Hodkinson, T.D.; Marchant, A.D.; Reznicek, A.A.; Nieuwborg, R.; Roalson, E.H.; Smets, E.; Starr, J.R.; Thomas, W.W.; Wilson, K.L.; Zhang, X..
Since the Monocots II meeting in 1998, significant new data have been published that enhance our systematic knowledge of Cyperaceae. Phylogenetic studies in the family have also progressed steadily. For this study, a parsimony analysis was carried out using all rbcL sequences currently available for Cyperaceae, including data for two new genera. One of the four subfamilies (Caricoideae) and seven of the 14 tribes (Bisboeckelereae, Cariceae, Cryptangieae, Dulichieae, Eleocharideae, Sclerieae, Trilepideae) are monophyletic. Subfamily Mapanioideae and tribe Chrysitricheae are monophyletic if, as the evidence suggests, Hellmuthia is considered a member of Cypereae. Some other features of our analysis include: well-supported Trilepideae and...

Taxonomic studies of Cheiropleuria (Dipteridaceae) Naturalis
Kato, Masahiro; Yatabe, Yoko; Sahashi, Norio; Murakami, Noriaki.
Morphological and molecular studies are made on the fern genus Cheiropleuria, which was treated in the past as monotypic. We describe C. parva, a new species from Borneo, and separate C. integrifolia, distributed in Japan and Taiwan and probably in China too, from Southeast Asian C. bicuspis. The three species differ from each other in the size, shape and texture of lamina, divergence angles between lobes, frequency of bilobed leaves, and spore size and morphology. Cheiropleuria parva is distinct from C. bicuspis populations sympatric on Mt Kinabalu in the leaves of juvenile and adult plants, suggesting reproductive isolation. Nucleotide differences in the rbcL gene support separation of the three species.

The genus Callophyllis (Kallymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) from the central-south Chilean coast (33° to 41° S), with the description of two new species RChHN
ARAKAKI,NATALIA; ALVEAL,KRISLER; RAMÍREZ,MARÍA ELIANA; FREDERICQ,SUZANNE.
The taxonomic status of the species in the genus Callophyllis Kützing (Kallymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) from central-south Chile (33° to 41° S) is examined on the basis of morphological and molecular evidence. Of the four species originally cited for central Chile, C. variegata, C. pinnata, C. atrosanguinea and C. laciniata, only the presence of C. variegata has been confirmed in this study. C. pinnata reported from Chile is found to be different from C. pinnata described from California, and it is here newly described as C. concepcionensis sp. nov. C. atrosanguinea from southern Chile (including C. linguata from the Antarctic Peninsula) is distinct from the species called C. atrosanguinea from central-south Chile, the latter which is here described as C....
